Mathematics (maths) is an important part of learning for all children in the early years and receiving a good grounding in maths is an essential life skill. As well as numeracy, it helps with skills such as problem solving, understanding and using shapes and measure, and developing their own spatial awareness. There are many opportunities for children to apply these skills independently during play, which mirror real life scenarios. This helps them develop a healthy and enthusiastic attitude towards maths which will stay with them for life.
At Sparrow Farm Infant and Nursery School we have adopted and adapted the White Rose Maths Scheme, which links to the objectives outlined in the National Curriculum, to support children’s learning of mathematical skills and concepts. The progressive sequence of lessons allows children to build on their prior knowledge and develop strong secure learning and real progress. We aim to develop happy, confident and resilient mathematicians.
Through accessing mathematical concepts and deepening their learning through real-life application and repeated practice, children understand the broader application of mathematical techniques and reasoning and their use in the real world.
